S&B/Energy Transfer Propane BOG

Project Overview
GROUP Contractors performed deep foundation and containment wall work for a new Burn-Off Gas (BOG) unit at Energy Transfer’s propane facility in Nederland, Texas. GROUP served as the civil subcontractor to S&B Engineers & Constructors and was involved early in the project, providing constructability input during design development.
Multiple pile types and design approaches were evaluated as the team worked to address the extremely low-temperature requirements of the facility’s operations. GROUP assisted with pile selection and material sourcing, coordinating with suppliers to evaluate availability, cost, and constructability.
The final scope included driving 481 precast concrete piles measuring 14 inches square and 50 to 60 feet long to support equipment foundations. GROUP also constructed 868 linear feet of sheet piles encased in concrete to form a containment wall measuring approximately four feet wide and more than 800 feet long, replacing an existing earthen berm.
Construction was performed within a constrained work area adjacent to the facility’s main roadway and under a schedule that experienced multiple disruptions. Work sequencing was adjusted to accommodate an unplanned maintenance turnaround, allowing pile driving to continue while wall construction was temporarily paused. Additional challenges included harder-than-anticipated ground conditions and weather-related delays.
GROUP coordinated closely with S&B throughout construction to manage sequencing, productivity, and schedule impacts. The project team tracked progress using scheduling software and participated in regular coordination meetings. GROUP completed the work ahead of the baseline schedule.
Project Included:
- 481 precast concrete piles driven for equipment foundations
- Constructed 868 linear feet of concrete-encased sheet pile wall
- Approximately 650 cubic yards of concrete placed for the containment wall
- Installation within an active propane facility and a constrained work area
- Work sequencing adjustments to accommodate schedule disruptions
- Delivered the project two weeks ahead of the planned completion date
“GROUP Contractors has proven to be an excellent deep foundation contractor and project partner with the capabilities to deliver the sheet pile and precast pile scope of work on time and under budget.”
